Girls' Generation (소녀시대 atau So Nyeo Shi Dae) adalah girlband asal Korea Selatan yang dibentuk oleh SM Entertainment pada tahun 2007. Mereka terdiri dari sembilan anggota: Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, dan Seohyun. Penggemar juga sering menyebut mereka sebagai SNSD, singkatan dari nama grup ini dalam bahasa Korea.
Setelah sukses dengan pembentukan Super Junior, SM Entertainment berencana mendebutkan grup wanita baru, yang pada akhirnya akan menjadi Girls' Generation, yang menampilkan daftar awal dari 11 anggota. Dalam pembentukannya, Girls' Generation sudah mengalami banyak revisi, seperti penambahan anggota maupun pengurangan anggota, sampai akhirnya terbentuk grup beranggotakan 9 orang. Sebelum pengumuman resmi, nama grup ini adalah Super Girls yang merupakan versi wanita dari Super Junior.
Pembentukan Girls' Generation diumumkan pada 16 Juli 2007 disertai pengumuman resmi profil masing-masing anggota. Acara M! Countdown di M.Net, 18 Juli 2007, menjadi tempat penampilan pertama Girls' Generation. Mereka membawakan lagu "Into the New World (다시 만난 세계)" yang dirilis sebagai singel pertama mereka. Agustus 2007 singel fisik tersebut dirilis dengan penambahan dua lagu baru, yaitu "Beginning" dan "Perfect For You (소원)", serta versi instrumental "Into the New World (다시 만난 세계)".
Album perdana Girls' Generation dirilis akhir musim gugur 2007 dengan lagu andalan berjudul "Girls' Generation". Ketika dibawakan Lee Seung Chul, lagu "Girls' Generation" sukses sebagai lagu hit, tapi ketika dibawakan mereka, album ini hanya terjual sejumlah 121.143 kopi. Pada awal tahun 2008, Girls' Generation mulai mempromosikan singel kedua dari album mereka, "Kissing You". Mereka memenangkan penghargaan K-Chart pertama di KBS Music Bank. Lagu ini juga mencapai posisi #1 dalam acara Inkigayo dan M! Countdown.
Pada bulan Maret 2008, mereka merilis album repackage, berjudul "Baby Baby". Girls' Generation merilis teaser untuk singel "Baby Baby" pada 15 Maret 2008. Singel ini dirilis di situs musik digital pada 17 Maret 2008. Mereka juga menampilkan "Baby Baby" di berbagai acara musik seperti Music Core, Inkigayo dan M! Countdown pada bulan Maret dan April. Promosi untuk album ini berakhir pada 13 April 2008 di Inkigayo.
Jessica, Tiffany, dan Seohyun ikut mengambil bagian dalam mini album yang dirilis oleh Roommate, sebuah one-man band dari Purple Communication. Mini album tersebut berjudul Roommate: Emotional Band Aid, dan dirilis pada 1 Desember 2008. Lagu yang mereka nyanyikan berjudul "Bad Brother (오빠 나빠)" terlebih dahulu dirilis secara digital pada bulan April 2008. Lagu ini sempat dibawakan secara live di Inkigayo, Music Bank, dan M! Countdown. Tidak lama kemudian, tiga anggota tersebut juga merilis "Mabinogi" (It's Fantastic!), sebuah lagu tema untuk game dari Nexon, Mabinogi.
Januari 2009, Girls' Generation merilis mini album "Gee". Singel berjudul sama dari album Gee langsung menjadi lagu terpopuler di Cyworld pada hari berikutnya, dan menempati urutan nomor satu semua tangga lagu digital dalam dua hari berikutnya. Di tangga lagu M.Net, "Gee" menjadi pemegang rekor lagu nomor satu yang bertahan paling lama (8 minggu) mengalahkan "Nobody" dari Wonder Girls. Girls' Generation menempati peringkat pertama selama 9 minggu berturut-turut dengan lagu "Gee", sekaligus memecahkan rekor acara Music Bank di KBS yang sebelumnya dipegang oleh Jewelry dengan "One More Time" (7 minggu berturut-turut). "Gee" mendapatkan gelar song of the decade dari situs musik Korea, MelOn.
Setelah istirahat sejenak, S.M Entertainment mengumukan bahwa Girls' Generation akan kembali dengan sebuah mini album baru yang menampilkan konsep "Marine Girl". Singel baru mereka diberi judul "Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)", dan albumnya dirilis secara digital pada 22 Juni 2009. Perilisan album dalam bentuk fisik ditunda oleh S.M. Entertainment untuk menggarap ulang cover album, dan akhirnya dirilis empat hari kemudian pada 29 Juni 2009. Penjualan album pada minggu pertama mencapai angka 50.000 kopi (hampir dua kali angka penjualan minggu pertama Gee).
Pada bulan November 2009, S.M. Entertainment mengumumkan tur konser pertama Girls' Generation yang bertajuk Into the New World. Tiket untuk konser ini mulai dijual pada 19 November[44] dan berhasil terjual habis hanya dalam waktu tiga menit. Tur dimulai di Olympic Park Fencing Stadium pada 19 dan 20 Desember dan berlanjut ke kota-kota lainnya di Asia, termasuk Shanghai.
Bulan Januari, SM Entertainment mengonfirmasi bahwa Girls' Generation akan merilis album keduanya, Oh! pada tanggal 28 Januari. Singel utama dari album tersebut yang berjudul "Oh!" dirilis secara digital pada 25 Januari disusul dengan video klipnya yang dirilis dua hari setelahnya. Dengan lagu "Oh!", Girls' Generation berhasil memenangi K-Chart 5 minggu berturut-turut pada acara KBS Music Bank, serta 3 kali kemenangan di SBS Inkigayo.
Tanggal 11 Maret 2010, foto-foto anggota dirilis secara online menampilkan konsep gelap, dijuluki "Black SoShi". Sebuah video teaser dirilis pada 16 Maret, dengan singel baru Run Devil Run dirilis sebagai singel digital pada 17 Maret. Pertengahan Juni, diumumkan bahwa Girls' Generation menandatangani kontrak pada bulan Mei, dan akan mulai bekerja di bawah label rekaman Universal Music Japan, Nayutawave Records Japan untuk promosi mereka di Jepang, dengan singel pertama mereka di Jepang diperkirakan akan dirilis pada bulan September 2010.
Singel debut Jepang mereka, "Genie" debut di tempat kelima pada hari yang sama dengan peluncurannya pada chart harian Oricon dan kemudian naik ke posisi kedua di Daily Oricon beberapa waktu kemudian, mendapatkan posisi keempat pada peringkat mingguan Oricon. Girls' Generation juga menempati nomor satu pada grafik video musik Jepang iTunes' dan kedua di Rekochoku chart harian video klip dan chart film yang masuk peringkat harian sehari kemudian. Dengan pre-order sebesar 80.000, singel dijual sebanyak 45.000 eksemplar pada minggu pertama setelah rilis. Pada tanggal 20 Oktober 2010, kelompok merilis singel kedua mereka di Jepang, "Gee".
Seminggu setelah merilis singel Jepang mereka, Girls' Generation ini merilis mini album Korea ketiga mereka, Hoot pada 27 Oktober 2010, berisi lima track. Girls' Generation memulai kegiatan promosi mereka dengan panggung comeback pada KBS Music Bank pada 29 Oktober. Girls' Generation melakukan promosi "Hoot" dan "Gee" bersamaan di Korea dan Jepang masing-masing, dan berpartisipasi dalam siaran musik Jepang seperti FNS Music Festival, di mana mereka tampil dengan dua singel Jepang mereka, "Gee" dan "Genie" pada tanggal 4 Desember.
Pada 9 Desember 2010, Girls' Generation menghadiri Golden Disk Awards dan dianugerahi tiga penghargaan termasuk Disk Daesang (Album of the Year) untuk album kedua mereka Oh!. Mereka juga menjadi kelompok gadis pertama yang memiliki Disk Daesang (2010) dan Digital Daesang (2009).
Pada 15 Desember 2010, mereka menghadiri Melon Music Awards dan memenangkan penghargaan Best Dressed Singer serta penghargaan Hot Trend Song untuk, "Hoot", juga penghargaan Artist of the Year. Ini akan menjadi kedua kalinya secara berturut-turut penghargaan 'Artist of the Year' diterima oleh Girls' Generation. Mereka menempati teratas Hanteo tahunan chart Singer Award untuk 2010.
Nama Girls' Generation terdaftar pada daftar Asia Today 50 Korean power leaders for 2011 di nomor 44, menjadi satu-satunya grup idola dari daftar. Girls' Generation ditetapkan "Artist of the Year" oleh Dosirak, Soribada, Korea Gallup, Hanteo dan Sport Korea dan juga memenangkan Best Song of The Year dengan "Oh!" di Monkey 3.
Pada pertengahan Januari diumumkan bahwa Girls' Generation akan akan kembali ke pasar musik Jepang dengan perilisan versi bahasa Jepang dari "Run Devil Run" sebagai singel digital, dijadwalkan untuk dirilis pada 25 Januari 2011.
Tanggal 20 Januari, di Seoul Music Awards ke-20 Girls' Generation menerima penghargaan Artist of the Year, Bonsang prize, Popularity Award dan Hallyu Award. Dengan ini Girls' Generation menjadi satu-satunya artis di sejarah musik Korea selain Seo Taiji, Jo Sungmo dan H.O.T. yang berhasil memenangkan penghargaan Artist of the Year dua tahun berturut-turut di Seoul Music Awards. Mereka juga menjadi satu-satunya girl group dalam sejarah yang menerima penghargaan Artist of the Year di Seoul Music Awards, dan Melon Music Awards selama dua tahun berturut-turut.
Girls' Generation menerima gelar Korea's No. 1 Power Celebrity dari Forbes Korea. Mereka tampil di konser ulang tahun ke-50 stasiun televisi MBC, Korean Music Wave in Bangkok di Thailand pada 12 Maret 2011 yang menandai penampilan pertama mereka di Thailand sejak Pattaya Music Festival bulan Maret 2009.
Tanggal 1 Juni 2011, mereka merilis album studio Jepang pertama yang bertajuk Girls' Generation. Album ini memuat 12 lagu termasuk singel "Genie", “Gee”, "Run Devil Run", "Mr. Taxi/Run Devil Run" dan versi Jepang dari "Hoot".
Album Girls' Generation disertifikasi Platinum oleh Recording Industry Association of Japan pada 14 Juni 2011 dan Double Platinum pada 8 Juli 2011. Grup ini juga mencetak rekor sebagai artis luar negeri dengan total penjualan album pertama tertinggi di Jepang. Girls' Generation adalah artis keempat yang mencapai posisi nomor 1 di chart album mingguan Oricon setelah BoA, TVXQ dan Big Bang, dan menjadi artis Korea ketiga yang melewati angka penjualan 500.000 kopi setelah BoA dan TVXQ. Seiring dengan popularitas mereka yang semakin bertambah, Girls' Generation pun menjadi artis luar negeri berpenghasilan tertinggi di Jepang pada paruh pertama tahun 2011. Album Girls' Generation telah terjual sebanyak lebih dari 629.436 keping, menjadikannya sebagai album oleh sebuah grup asal Korea yang paling banyak terjual dalam sejarah tangga lagu Oricon.
Tanggal 26 September 2011 S.M. Entertainment mengumumkan bahwa Girls' Generation akan kembali dengan album Korea ketiga mereka "The Boys. Foto teaser mereka memiliki konsep cerita dongeng dan foto pertama yang menampilkan Taeyeon dirilis pada hari itu juga, disusul oleh Sunny dan Hyoyeon pada 27 September, Jessica, Sooyoung dan Tiffany pada 28 September serta Yoona, Yuri, dan Seohyun pada 29 September. Video teaser pertama untuk "The Boys" dirilis pada 1 Oktober 2011 melalui kanal YouTube milik S.M. Entertainment.
Single utama album ketiga mereka, "The Boys" dirilis dalam dua bahasa yaitu Korea dan Inggris. Lagu tersebut diciptakan dan diaransemen oleh Teddy Riley yang pernah menjadi produser Michael Jackson. Hanya dalam waktu beberapa menit setelah "The Boys" dirilis, album tersebut langsung menerima "all-kill" di berbagai tangga lagu situs musik online maupun offline di Korea. Meskipun tidak tercatat pada Billboard Hot 100, lagu tersebut berhasil mencapai puncak di dalam Top 30 pada grafik di iTunes Amerika Serikat, menjual lebih dari 21.000 eksemplar dan menjadi salah satu penjualan lagu K-Pop terbaik, pada waktu itu, di Amerika Serikat. Album berjudul sama terjual 227.994 eksemplar dalam waktu dua belas hari di Korea Selatan, menjadi album terlaris pada bulan Oktober dan ketiga terbaik pada tahun 2011.
Seminggu setelah penampilan comeback mereka, Girls' Generation memenangkan penghargaan pertama untuk "The Boys" di M! Countdown pada 27 Oktober, kedua di Music Bank pada 28 Oktober dan yang ketiga pada 30 Oktober di Inkigayo. The Boys terjual sebanyak 227.994 kopi selama 12 hari dan menjadi album yang paling banyak terjual di Korea Selatan untuk bulan Oktober.
Pada tanggal 7 Desember 2011, diumumkan bahwa Girls 'Generation akan merilis versi repackage dari album Jepang pertama mereka, "Girls' Generation", yang termasuk versi Jepang dari "The Boys", dan versi remix dari "The Great Escape", "Bad Girl", dan "Mr Taxi". Album ini juga berisi lagu baru, "Time Machine". Album ini dirilis pada tanggal 28 Desember 2011.
Pada 12 Januari, Girls' Generation menghadiri "Golden Disk Awards" yang digelar di Osaka. Mereka berhasil membawa pulang dua penghargaan yaitu "Digital Bonsang" dan "Digital Daesang" yang merupakan penghargaan terbesar yang diberikan malam itu. Mereka juga menghadiri Seoul Music Awards pada 19 Januari dan memenangkan dua penghargaan, "Bonsang" dan "Popularity Award".
Girls' Generation tampil untuk pertama kalinya di acara bincang-bincang malam Amerika, Late Show with David Letterman pada 31 Januari. Mereka menyanyikan versi remix dari "The Boys" dalam bahasa Inggris. Mereka juga tampil di acara Live! with Kelly keesokan harinya. Girls' Generation merupakan penyanyi Korea pertama yang tampil di kedua acara televisi tersebut. Mereka juga menjadi bintang tamu di acara televisi Perancis Le Grand Journal pada 9 Februari. Girls' Generation merilis album The Boys secara resmi di Perancis pada tanggal 13 Februari 2012 melalui label Polydor Records.
Pada 19 April, S.M. Entertainment mengumumkan proyek sub-unit terbaru Girls' Generation, TaeTiSeo yang beranggotakan Taeyeon, Tiffany, dan Seohyun. Mini album pertama mereka Twinkle akan dirilis pada 29 April 2012 dalam digital dan 2 Mei 2012 dalam CD. "Twinkle" debut di nomor 126 di Billboard 200 , menjual lebih dari 3.000 eksemplar dan membuatnya tertinggi charting album K-Pop pada grafik sejauh ini.
Pada tanggal 27 Juni 2012, Girls' Generation merilis single Jepang terbaru mereka "Paparazzi". Di bulan yang sama, mereka memenangkan "Best Album of the Year" untuk album pertama mereka di Jepang pada 2012 VMAJs . Pada tanggal 3 Juli 2012 diumumkan bahwa Girls' Generation akan merilis perangko resmi pada bulan berikutnya untuk memperingati HUT ke-5 mereka. Sebanyak 14 perangko diproduksi, termasuk cover album yang ditandatangani. Ini menandai pertama kalinya seorang selebriti telah membuat kontrak dengan Korea Posting untuk memproduksi prangko.
Pada 26 September 2012, Girls' Generation kembali merilis single Jepang berikutnya yaitu Oh!/ All My Love Is For You. Oh!, meraih tempat pertama pada chart Oricon Weekly Single, menjual 66.000 kopi dalam minggu pertama. Complete Video Collection mereka menempati tempat pertama di chart Oricon Weekly DVD and Blu-ray, menjual 59.000 cakram kolektif. Mereka adalah seniman kedua yang mencapai posisi nomor satu pada ketiga grafik di minggu yang sama. Satu-satunya kelompok lain yang mencapai prestasi yang sama adalah band rock pop Jepang, Mr. Children.
Album Jepang kedua mereka, Girls' Generation II ~Girls & Peace~, dirilis pada 28 November 2012. Sebelumnya mereka merilis singel "Flower Power", pada 21 November 2012.
Pada 1 Januari 2013, Girls' Generation merilis album Korea keempat mereka, I Got A Boy. Album ini terjual lebih dari 265.000 eksemplar pada bulan Januari, memulai debutnya di puncak Januari Gaon Chart Album. Album ini tercatat pada Billboard chart album, termasuk nomor satu di chart Album Dunia. Mereka mulai melakukan promosi di Mnet 's M! Countdown. Girls' Generation juga memiliki acara comeback khusus pada MBC Romantic Fantasy Girls 'Generation pada tanggal 1 Januari 2013. Girls' Generation juga tampil pada KBS Hope Concert. mereka juga mengadakan acara "Virtual Concert" yang disiarkan langsung melalui Naver Music pada 5 Januari 2013 di mana mereka menampilkan lagu "I Got a Boy", "Talk Talk", dan "Dancing Queen".
Tanggal 9 Februari 2013, Girls' Generation memulai Girls & Peace: 2nd Japan Tour di Kobe, dan dilanjutkan di tujuh kota lainnya. Mereka juga merilis remix Jepang pertama mereka, Best Selection Non Stop Mix, pada 20 Maret 2013. Pada 26 April 2013, Girls' Generation mengumumkan tur dunia pertama mereka, Girls' Generation World Tour Girls & Peace dengan tanggal pertama di Seoul pada 8 dan 9 Juni 2013.
Girls' Generation merilis singel Jepang ketujuh, "Love & Girls" pada 19 Juni 2013. "Love & Girls" naik dari nomor 6 ke nomor 4 satu hari setelah debut di Oricon Daily Chart. Singel terjual sebanyak 42.796 eksemplar fisik pada minggu pertama dan menempati nomor 4 di Oricon Weekly Chart. Tanggal 18 September 2013, Girls' Generation merilis singel Jepang kedelapan, "Galaxy Supernova" bersamaan dengan Girls' Generation -Girls & Peace- Japan 2nd Tour DVD and Blu-ray. Singel menempati nomor 1 pada hari perilisannya di Oricon Daily Single, sedangkan Girls’ Generation Girls & Peace: 2nd Japan Tour menempati nomor 1 pada Oricon Daily DVD Chart. Setelah satu minggu perilisannya, Galaxy Supernova, berhasil terjual 50.793 eksemplar fisik sedangkan DVD dan Blu-ray terjual sebanyak 53.256 eksemplar.
Girls' Generation tampil perdana di YouTube Music Awards karena memenangkan nominasi Best Music Video dan mengalahkan artis-artis terkenal seperti Miley Cyrus, Psy, Lady Gaga dan Justin Bieber. Kelompok merilis singel Jepang kesembilan, "My Oh My" pada 5 November 2013.
Kelompok merilis album studio ketiga, "Love & Peace" pada 11 Desember 2013 setelah merilis "Love & Girls", "Galaxy Supernova" dan "My Oh My" pada 2013. Album tersebut berhasil debut di nomor pertama pada chart album harian Oricon setelah terjual lebih dari 37.386 eksemplar.
S.M. Entertainment mengumumkan bahwa Girls' Generation akan tampil untuk "SM Town Week" pertama pada 22 Desember 2013. Konser solo Girls’ Generation 22 Desember, disebut, “SMTOWN WEEK GIRLS’ GENERATION – Marchen Fantasy”. Konser akan memiliki tema visual yang seperti dongeng, dengan banyak tahapan yang berbeda dan efek video mencolok.
Pada 10 Februari 2014, SM Entertainment merilis nama album, tanggal rilis serta teaser video di channel YouTube mereka untuk Mr.Mr. dan menyatakan bahwa lagu tersebut akan dirilis pada 19 Februari ke berbagai situs portal musik online, sementara album yang sebenarnya hanya akan dirilis pada tanggal 24 Februari. Laporan eksklusif OSEN pada 13 Februari, mengungkapkan proses editing video musik Girls' Generation mengalami kehilangan data yang mengakibatkan terhapusnya sebagian dari rekaman. Hal ini mengakibatkan pengunduran jadwal comeback dari yang telah ditentukan sebelumnya.
Girls' Generation merilis Mr.Mr pada 24 Februari di berbagai situs musik Korea dan luar negeri, termasuk iTunes, sementara album fisik akan dirilis pada tanggal 27 Februari 2014. Mereka dijadwalkan tampil pada tanggal 6 Maret di Mnet M! Countdown.
